Plan A Overview

There are currently 10 different Medigap policies out of those Plan A is a basic policy. Every Insurance company that offers medicare supplemental insurance is required to offer this plan. In order to get any Supplemental policy you must already have Medicare parts A and B.

The Medicare Supplemental policy Plan A offers less coverage than the other 9 policies; however, this plan is good for you if you are on budget or if you have obtained medicare due to a disability.

Plan A is a Medigap policy that only covers the Basic Benefits section of standard Supplemental Insurance plans.

What Medigap Plan A Covers

  • 100% of Medicare Part A coinsurance and copayment but not the deductible. It also covers an entire year (365 days) of hospital care after your Medicare coverage has been exhausted.
  • 100% of Medicare Part B coinsurance. This is typically 20% of Medicare approved payment amount.
  • 100% of the cost of your first three pints of blood.
  • 100% of coinsurance for Medicare Preventive Care Part B
  • Hospice Part A coinsurance. This includes copayment for outpatient prescription drugs and coinsurance for respite care.

What Medigap Plan A Does Not Cover

  • Skilled Nursing coinsurance
  • Part A Deductible
  • Part B Deductible
  • Part B Excess Charges
  • Foreign Travel Emergency Care
  • Preventative Care
  • At Home Recovery
  • Vision Care
  • Dental Care
